貓鎮的小公寓 . A tiny condo in Los Gatos

Turned out that when I don’t have to work, I actually have so much to do and have no time to blog… hum… intriguing…

When I started painting the 2nd wall in my living room yesterday afternoon, my hands and arms were already sore. I was staring at the wall, thinking if the new color’s too yellow, realizing my condo is actully not as small as I thought it is, and suddenly, a thought flashed thru: 貓鎮的黃色小公寓.

My mom always like to say I live in 貓鎮 ever since she knew Los Gatos is a town, not a city. (why is that?) 貓 = cat = gato, 鎮 = town.

Why not make it my Chinese blog title, then… :)

Maybe it’s a sign… ;)

ㄉㄠˇ ㄏㄨㄟ 喔~~~

  ㄉㄠˇ ㄏㄨㄟ in Taiwanese
= 豆花 in Chinese
= tofu-fa in Cantonese
= (literally) soy flower in English
= soy custard

Fresh and yummy!!! :D

So we went to the farmer’s market in San Francisco this morning to look for 豆花 Noriko told me about. The stand is called (something) Soy (was too busy eating and didn’t pay attention to the name), and it’s right in front of the Ferry Building (towards left if you’re facing the building). VERY authentic taste! and really fresh. They even provide ginger syrup to go with it! :D

Now if they also put boiled peanuts in it, it’d be perfect. :P

豆花 is probably the only thing that’s worth driving to San Francisco for on Saturday morning, though. I mean, $5/lb cherries?! Un-uh.

There was a LONG line in front of “Cocina Primavera” (Mexican foods), but by the time we finished our 豆花, Everything’s sold out. Maybe should try that next time. I’m pretty sure I’ll have the 豆花 craving soon. :P

I think the best 豆花 I’ve ever had is from the traditional market near the place we used to live in Taiwan. The old man who sold it would go to the market in the early morning (and I mean EARLY, like, between 6 and 7). They’re sold out pretty quickly, so we (my mom, actually) would have to go there early if we want to have it for breakfast. He has only warm 豆花, I remember, and will give you LOTS of ginger syrup. And peanuts! 豆花’s styles somehow get fancier nowadays (in Taiwan), but still I like that old man’s the best.

Cloudy Santa Cruz

Back in the old days (basically, my pre-college days), NOT taking days off from school is considered a virtue.

So, if you don’t take ANY days off during the school year, you actually get rewarded as if that’s some kind of accomplishment. Some people do get the “award” when I was in elementary school, though I can’t understand how a kid doesn’t get sick EVER during the school year.

But then I loved studying so much in junior high, that I actually got that award. I didn’t take any days off in my 3 years of staying there. :|

Horrible, isn’t it?

And it back-fired in high school. I enjoyed going to school less and less, up to a point that I’d just simply not go. I hide in the school gym and read my own books ’cause my mom wouldn’t let me stay at home just because I don’t feel like going to school.

And I got caught. This is a VERY serious matter back in my high school, the prestigious, the best, girl-only high school in Taiwan. All my teachers talked to me, and I’m asked to go to the student counselor every week.

Fortunately, the counselor was the teacher whom I’m really close to before all these happened. Obviously she knew what she was doing and what kind of person she’s dealing with. She persuaded other teachers and my mother that, it’s actually better for me to stay at home on the days that I really don’t want to go to school.

and I got into one of the best colleges in Taiwan after graduating from high school. No one in my class could believe it.

I think none of the teachers could, either, except the counselor.

Today is Friday, and it’s not a holiday.

We tried the Greek resturant Chris mentioned (Vasili’s) in Santa Cruz. REALLY liked it. I wanted to go to Mystery Spot, but ht thought it’s silly.

and it was cloudy in Santa Cruz today…
